Fetal Presentation Birth. The fetal lie is the relationship between the baby’s head-to-tailbone axis to the mother’s head-to-tailbone axis. If the two are parallel, then the baby has a longitudinal lie. If the two are perpendicular and have a 90 degree angle to one other, the baby is in a transverse lie. 99.5% of infants engaged for birth have a longitudinal lie. The relationship of fetal body parts to one another is referred to as the fetal attitude or fetal position. Fetal attitude is important because it determines the necessary width of the birth canal. Normally, the legs are pulled up to the chest, the arms are folded tight to the chest, the head is tucked at the chest. In abnormal attitudes might be when the head is extended back in a lordotic position. Or the arms and feet might be folded backward. Medical Illustration.
